The Pacific can appear almost constant from the shore, yet no encounter with it is ever quite the same. From the edge of San Francisco, its familiar surface gives way to radically different worlds: the pull of an undertow, the churn inside a breaking wave, moonlight glimpsed from beneath the surface, or darkness moving across the water at night.

Countercurrents invites us to stay with these contradictory states, to notice how turbulence and stillness, danger and beauty, uncertainty and calm can belong to the same body. In looking closely at the ocean’s changing states, we might recognize something of our own: not something to resolve, but something to accept, live with, and perhaps even marvel at.
